As the Assistant Manager at Outward Bound Singapore (OBS), I engage with students and trainers everyday. I help to conduct outdoor expeditions for secondary 3 students and also conduct outdoor and height element activities for SPF, Civil Defence and pilot cadets. I struggled engaging with young students because their interests and mindsets are different. Since they're still young, they didn't listen to the trainer's instruction which makes them hard to handle so I had to learn how to speak tactfully so that they don't get offended. Another thing I also struggled with is speaking to my colleagues and explaining to them how to improve on their methods. Since I have a strong detemination to upgrade my skill set to better communicate with colleagues and students, I enrolled in 3 courses: Effective People Management, Crisis and Conflict Management and Critical Thinking Skills for Effective Decision-Making. I learnt how to brand myself and be a role model within the organisation, speak confidently and resolve conflicts. I felt that I was a better asset to the company after attending the courses, my immediate boss saw that I was able to carry out tasks confidently and independently. My career prospects improved and helped me be more open-minded.
